The Democrats who have, and haven't, endorsed Kamala Harris: List - Washington Examiner (2024)

Vice President Kamala Harris‘s campaign announced it raked in nearly $50 million in the hours following President Joe Biden‘s decision Sunday to bow out of the presidential race.

Endorsem*nts by governors, senators, and representatives for Harris continue to pour in. Notably, though, top leadership and key Democratic kingmakers have fallen short of publicly supporting her.

Here is the breakdown of who has endorsed Harris and who has not.

Endorsed

President Joe Biden

Having served with Harris over the past four years, Biden endorsed her as the Democratic nominee shortly after stepping out of the race.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” Biden posted on X. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsem*nt for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton

The Clintons have been key players in the Biden campaign, with the couple having helped raise $8.1 million for Biden back in June at a single fundraising event. Prior to Biden’s announcement, the couple privately urged donors to continue giving money to Biden’s campaign. Now they have fully endorsed Harris.

“Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her,” the Clintons wrote in a joint statement posted on X. “America’s future depends on it.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL)

The second-in-command Democratic senator endorsed Harris for president. Notably, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has yet to give Harris his stamp of approval.

“I’m proud to endorse my former Senate colleague and good friend, Vice President Kamala Harris,” Durbin said in a statement. “Our nation needs to continue moving forward with unity and not MAGA chaos. Vice President Harris was a critical partner in building the Biden record over the past four years.”

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA)

She is the No. 2 House representative and is giving her full support for a Harris presidency.

Not Endorsed

The list of those who have acknowledged Biden’s exit from the race but have fallen short of endorsing Harris is quite a bit shorter than that of those who have backed her. Some of the most important and powerful Democrats in the country haven’t said they are standing behind Harris before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, but they haven’t rejected the possibility of backing her at a later date.

Former President Barack Obama

Notably, Obama didn’t immediately endorse Biden in 2020.

In his statement commemorating Biden’s decision to exit the race, Obama praised Biden for all that he accomplished in his term.

“For now, Michelle and I just want to express our love and gratitude to Joe and Jill for leading us so ably and courageously during these perilous times  —  and for their commitment to the ideals of freedom and equality that this country was founded on,” the former president said in a statement.
