Selecting Junior Festival Music for your Students

Here is a summary of the general rules surrounding Junior Festival. Some exceptions do apply, especially in regards to the vocal, string, and flute events. For further details, please refer to the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin  available for $6 at Bonnie’s Music Shoppe.
Teachers are responsible for correctly selecting classifications and music! Please follow all instructions carefully so this may be a wonderful experience for you and your students!

  1. Students must play one required piece selected from compositions listed in the bulletin and one choice piece selected by the teacher.

  2. In all Primary classes, the choice piece must be by a different composer than the required piece.

  3. In levels Elementary I and above, the choice composition must be an original from works of non-American composers.

  4. Choice compositions must not be listed in the festival bulletin for the event.

  5. Pre-Primary and Primary I choice pieces must be at least 12 measures long.

  6. Primary II and above choice pieces must be at least 16 measures long.

  7. Standard editions are acceptable (original works only). No arrangements, abridgments or transcriptions may be used. Only complete compositions are acceptable (though one movement of a multi-movement work will be considered as a choice selection).

  8. Required and choice pieces must represent the same level of musicianship.

  9. All music should be memorized (see bulletin for specific exceptions).

  10. First-time entrants enter any appropriate class determined by the teacher.

  11. Students who receive a superior rating must progress to a higher level the following year (in the piano, string, and vocal categories).

  12. Students who receive less than a superior rating may remain at the same level for one more year or progress to a higher level.

  13. Maximum time limits for piano choice compositions (all repeats should be omitted except in short primary compositions):

a. All Primary classes 3 minutes
b. Elementary through Medium 5 minutes
c. Mod. Dif. through Dif. II 6 minutes
d. Very Dif. through Musically Advanced II 8 minutes
