continuation of music studies for developing young musicians.
Students compete within their age group and instrument category.
First and second prize winners are presented in formal concerts.
Senior Division first place winners receive scholarship money
intended to further their musical education. In 2004 we were pleased
to announce the inauguration of the Ennio Bolognini Chamber Music
Competition.

format. Judges will not interrupt performances.

Repertoire
In the solo category, each entrant must perform two
contrasting works from memory. One selection must be from the
Baroque or Classical periods; the second must be from the Romantic
or Contemporary periods. Both selections must be of recital quality.
Neither cuts nor editing are allowed—even to stay within specified
time limits.
First place winners may not use the same musical selections in any
future competition. Second place winners may compete in the same age
category with the same music in subsequent years.
In the chamber music category, entrants may perform one movement of
a chamber work composed or arranged specifically for their
instruments. The movement performed must stay within prescribed time
limits. Transcriptions of concerti for piano and soloist are not
allowed as chamber music and should be entered into the solo
competition. Performers may select a piece from any musical period.
Judges
Up to three judges will adjudicate each entrant. Except in the case
where a winning competitor’s behavior disqualifies him/her, the
judges’ decision is final and will not be changed by entrants,
teachers, parents or the chairperson. No one other than the
chairperson and designated competition personnel shall interact with
the judges. Competitors, their teachers or parents found interacting
with judges prior to or during the competition will be disqualified.
Judges may award one First Place, one Second Place, and as many
Honorable Mentions in each category as they deem necessary. Judges
are not required to award any prizes; however, they shall not name
more than one First and one Second place winner in any category.
Accompanists
Entrants in Categories 2 and 3 who use accompanists must use the
same accompanist in the winner’s recital. Teachers may not accompany
their own students.
Procedures
A. Parents and entrants should not contact the competition
chairperson for any matter. All communication regarding the
competition shall pass through the entrant’s teacher. Anyone
contacting the chairperson will be redirected to their teacher.
B. Teachers are responsible for the completion of student entry
forms, collecting all entrance fees, and mailing all entries, with
one check payable to LVMTA, by the deadline date. Incomplete or
unreadable applications will be returned to the teachers. Be sure
students’ names are spelled correctly! Staple individual chamber
group applications together.
C. The teacher is responsible for seeing that all rules are
followed. Failure to follow procedures will result in the entrant
being penalized.
D. Teachers will be notified of their students’ competition time at
least ten days before the event. Category I entrants may be allowed
one rehearsal on the competition piano the day prior to the contest
(depending on availability). Teachers will be notified of their
students’ rehearsal times.
E. The competition is open to the public. No one is allowed to enter
or leave the room once the recital group has begun. It is requested
that you do not bring young children to observe the competition.
Under no circumstances shall teachers make obvious which competitors
are theirs; this could result in the entrant being penalized. (This
includes: helping with tuning, adjusting the bench or any other
types of equipment, page turning, giving instructions to students
while judges are present, etc.)
F. Entrants must bring published originals of all music to be
performed. Absolutely no Xerox copies. Accompanists using music may
not use copies, with the exception of copies used to aid in page
turning. Measures must be numbered; at least the first number of
every system. Teacher marks are admissible, but no names should be
visible on the music.
G. Entrants must register at least 30 minutes prior to their
scheduled audition time. Music should already be prepared with names
covered and measures numbered. Competitors will then be taken to a
warm-up room. All rooms are reserved for competitors just prior to
their audition time and other entrants may be asked to vacate rooms
for competitors who need to warm up.
H. In the event that pianist competitors have a rehearsal, they must
observe their time exactly, even if the entrant before or after them
is unable to rehearse. Failure to comply with this rule will result
in the disqualification of the entrant.
I. Student biographies must not exceed a 50-word maximum and must be
written in biography format. Resumes will not be accepted.
Additionally, the biography must be included on the back of the
application; separate sheets will not be accepted.
J. Chamber ensembles should create a group name that does not
include the names of the performers or their teachers. The group
name must be included on the application form along with the names
of the other musicians.
